The Arts Council of Moore County is dedicated to inspiring & strengthening our community through the arts. Join us on a project that will combine ART and PLACE in a very special way.

THE CAMPAIGN – Arts Council Gallery Addition to Campbell House

The Arts Council seeks to raise $3.5 million for a major gallery addition to Campbell House, the first capital campaign in our 50+ years. The project will add 1,600 sq. ft. to the south side of the house, allowing the community to enjoy more on-site events such as large-scale & travelling art exhibits, lectures, concerts, seminars, and more. The addition will elevate the Arts Council Galleries as an important destination and enhance our capacity as a viable cultural center in our historic location at 482 East Connecticut Avenue in Southern Pines, North Carolina.

AN HISTORIC OPPORTUNITY

The Arts Council of Moore County is growing and the Campbell House must grow with us if we are to meet the needs of our growing community. For over 100 years, the Campbell House has been a beacon of culture, enhancing and influencing civic life. The house core was once part of the original Boyd mansion, located 100 feet in front of present-day Weymouth Center. In the early 1920s, a section of the house was moved across the street to become the home of Jackson Boyd. In 1946, Mr. & Mrs. W.D. Campbell purchased the property. The Campbell Family gave the property to the town in 1966, requesting it be used for the cultural and social enrichment of the community. True to their wishes, the Campbell House has continually been utilized by the Arts Council.

GALLERY ADDITION DETAILS

The Arts Council has engaged Liberatos Architects, a classical architecture and design firm, to create plans for a major addition matching the historic structure. The addition’s main feature will be a large art gallery with room for seating 150 people, a separate meeting room, and walls to display large works of art. The plan also includes a new small art gallery, two ADA accessible restrooms, and an elevator for visitor access to the 2nd floor and to the basement for storage.

The project has been endorsed by the Town of Southern Pines and the Campbell Family. We hope to break ground by 2027.

CAMPBELL HOUSE LANDSCAPE PLAN

The Arts Council is working with award-winning landscape engineer, Glenn Bradley, who has begun the preservation, rehabilitation and restoration of the grounds in and around the house. Based on the original 1948 design by Innocenti & Webel, our plan is for the outside of Campbell House to reflect the period when the Campbell Family occupied the home from 1948-1966.

LARGE GALLERY DECORATED CEILING

The large gallery will feature an artisan-made decorative plaster ceiling, ornamented with paintings created by noted classical realist artists who lived and trained in Southern Pines. Similar in nature to frescoes located in western North Carolina, the ceiling will attract visitors along East Connecticut Avenue, a North Carolina Scenic Byway anchored by the Arts Council, Fort Liberty, Southern Pines Horse Country, Weymouth Center, and Weymouth Woods Nature Preserve.

CAMPBELL HOUSE ENDOWMENT FUND

In addition to the Gallery Addition project, we will establish an endowment fund with a target amount of $1.5 million. This fund will support the Arts Council’s activities and stewardship of the house and grounds–leaving an artistic legacy for generations to come.
